The Art of Capturing a Performance

I want to take a moment to draw attention to one of the hard working individuals that many local musicians have come to rely on to document their performances. Brian Matus Photography was recently hired to shoot the Guilty Pleasures show a few weeks ago at the Nutty Irishman, in Farmingdale on Long Island. This was an important performance for two reasons: it was Guilty Pleasures’ debut at the Irishman and it was the performance debut of an all-new Gimenez Guitars prototype. Photographing this show was especially challenging due to the less-than-ideal lighting at the venue. The lack of white lights on the stage made the conditions very dark… and… well… red. Not wanting to use a fill flash for fear of ruining the natural look of the performance, Brian took the raw photos into his editing suite and brought them back to life in a way that only he could.

It’s worth noting that the equipment and software used to shoot and edit the photos for any show are not cheap. You can’t get these kind of results with a point-and-shoot or a smartphone. In addition to that, a great deal of time is often spent editing them in order to bring out the best aspects of the performance and the musicians. As you look thru Brian’s portfolio and admire his eye for drama and his skill, please keep him in mind when you need quality photos for your press kit or other promotional material (like your Facebook and Twitter pages!). Much like a struggling musician, he’s just looking to make a few bucks with his art.
